on the subject of travel…

There is far too much to say about travel for just a short introduction to these photos, so instead I want to include the beginning of an artist bio which was written by my brother, Colin Baumgartner, for a collaborative show I had with him and my other brother, Trevor. The show was a collection of photos from our travels, and was an incredible demonstration of the same medium and same general subject, but with each of us interpreting what we experienced in wonderfully distinct ways.

“When the three of us sat down to discuss a theme for a show, the idea of travel was something that connected with all of us.  The very best art deals with connection—connection to other places, other times, other perspectives—it allows us to break through the confines of our own limited experience to reach some greater, more complete understanding of the world.  Travel does this same work.

We’ve all travelled individually, but have also prioritized finding time to travel together.  These sibling trips have cemented an already close bond.  Even as the three of us move through the same landscape, each of us focuses on slightly different salient points.  We thought that a show including a few pieces from each of us could nicely explore the beauty of individual perspective.”
